Cooling Down the House

It seems silly to complain about the weather in Sydney right now, especially compared to other parts of the country, but there’s no mistaking that is has been extremely hot here lately!

When the mercury starts to rise though there are things we can all do to help keep our houses and ourselves cool. Here are some ideas to help keep you cool:

  • Turn on the fans – Fans are a great option for helping to cool you down. If you own your home then consider getting ceiling fans installed in the most commonly used rooms of your house. If you rent then pedestal fans are also a good option and can be very cheap too!
  • Shade from the sun – It’s obviously a lot hotter in direct sunlight, so try and stay in the shade when you can. Same goes for your house, if you have windows then put curtain up or install window awnings to help keep the sunshine out of the house.
  • The air-con is saviour – When it gets really hot sometimes the only way to cool down is with the use of air-conditioning. People get deterred by using air conditioners though because of the cost. But you can save a lot of money on your power bills by simply turning the temperature up a little. Try setting it to 26 degrees which is still a comfortable level and let the fans do the rest.
  • Insulate – Insulation can help to drastically cool your house down on hotter days and also has the added benefit of helping to keep the home warm when winter time rolls around.
If the hot weather really does get too much though, then take advantage of it by taking a swim or eating an icey-cold iceblock.
