Earth HourBy now most people in Liverpool have probably heard of Earth Hour, an event that has encouraged households and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for just one hour to help raise awareness about the importance of preserving energy.

Famous landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Kremlin, the Empire State Building and the Eiffel Tower have all taken part in the event in the past.

This year many people will be turning their lights off again except for a slightly different reason, this year everyone in Australia will be turning their lights off to help raise awareness for the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef is currently a threatened area for a number of reasons and so Earth Hour is trying to gather support from the community to help convince the Federal Government to take action and protect one of Australia’s most cherished natural landmarks.

We can all support Earth Hour’s campaign by turning our lights off on Saturday March 29 at 8:30pm or we can join in on their Instagram campaign where we can share our love for the reef. Anyone can also create an Earth Hour gathering or donate money directly to the cause.

For those interested in learning more about the campaign you can visit http://earthhour.org.au/ and you can also watch a documentary about the reef, which will be aired on Channel 10 just before Earth Hour begins.

Will you be taking part in Earth Hour this year?
