asbestos dumpingA new asbestos disposal scheme will be trialled in western Sydney to help reduce the incidence of illegal dumping.

The new Householders’ Asbestos Disposal Scheme will be run over 24 council areas, including Liverpool, and it will be trialling cheaper and easier disposal for small amounts of wrapped bonded asbestos from home renovators.

Individuals will be able to dispose of up to five tonnes of material, which should be more than enough considering the average 1950’s built home is estimated to hold about 4 tonnes of asbestos material.

The state government will be providing a $50 incentive per tonne for registered residents who dispose of their waste correctly at a nominated landfill. The waste levy on bonded asbestos will also be waived if disposed of in the trial areas.

Hopefully the new scheme will help prevent illegal dumping of asbestos, as it is an extremely harmful chemical and all measures should be taken to ensure that it is disposed of safely and correctly.
