If you are concerned about your car’s safety when you leave it out on the street, the Liverpool City Council is currently offering free car immobilisers to help prevent car theft.
Immobilisers have been shown to be one of the most effective devices used for vehicle security safety and while most newer models of cars already use them, a lot of older vehicles don’t. Normally they cost $200 but the council are giving away 100 of them for free for those who give the best reason as to why they need one.
If you miss out on a free car immobiliser from the Liverpool City Council though there are a number of other ways they have suggested to keep our vehicles safe, here they are:
- Never leave your car unattended with the key in the ignition
- Don’t leave car keys lying around on tables, desks or key hooks
- Never hide a second set of keys in your car – thieves know where to look
- If your car is at home but you are out, make sure all sets of keys are with you
- If you can, park behind lockable gates or in a locked garage
- At night, park in a well lit and busy area
- Use secure car parks where they are available
- When leaving your car unattended, fully close the windows, lock all the doors and take the keys with you
- Never leave items such as mobile phones, bags, CDs or other valuables in sight within your car
- Steering locks can provide a visual deterrent to thieves
- An engine immobiliser provides the most effective deterrent to thieves – you can get an engine immobiliser to prevent thieves from starting your car for under $200
- When approaching your parked car, be aware of your surroundings. If you are suspicious of anyone following you or standing near your car, walk away and call the police.
