Last week in my blog I talked about growing your own vegetables in the backyard, but some locals are taking the growing challenge a step further for the Great Backyard Pumpkin Challenge.
The aim of the pumpkin challenge is to grow the biggest pumpkin possible to be weighed-in and displayed at next year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Last year’s pumpkin winner came in at a whopping 255kg and it had to be trucked in from central NSW.
If you’re pumpkin doesn’t end up turning into a massive monster of a pumpkin though, it can also compete in the categories of best dressed pumpkin, best celebrity look-alike pumpkin or the smallest ripe pumpkin.
The Great Backyard Pumpkin Challenge gives pumpkin growers instructions to help them grow their pumpkins, so even if you have never entered the competition before it’s easy to join in and it’s a lot of fun too.
To enter you will need to visit the Liverpool Leader office at Reilly Centre, 387 Hume Hwy, Liverpool and collect your Atlantic Giant seeds and growing instructions or you can simply use your own pumpkin seeds and start growing!
