Sydney group calls for a FairGo for Solar

A group of Sydney homeowners are calling on electricity retailers to provide one-for-one feed-in tariffs for energy produced by home solar panels.

At present there are many homeowners in the Liverpool area who have solar panels at their home, and who help feed energy back into the grid, however many believe that this energy is poorly compensated for.

That’s why the FairGo for Solar campaign has been launched and it is appealing for retailers to pay the same rates for power as customers do.

Electricity retailers are currently only paying between 5 and 10 cents per kilowatt hour for the electricity that is fed into the grid from home solar panels.

NSW residents are however charged more than 21 cents per kilowatt hour for the energy that they use, and many believe that this is unfair and isn’t doing anything to help encourage households to take up solar energy power.

There are a lot of houses in Liverpool who are trying to be sustainable and “green” by having solar panels, and these homes are helping give energy back to electricity retailers that is then charged out at a higher rate, so it seems fair that there should be a 1 for 1 solar feed in tariff.

The Greens have estimated that retailers could be receiving about $100 million worth of free energy a year.

If you agree that there should be a 1 for 1 tariff, you can find out more about the FairGo for Solar Campaign and support it at www.communityrun.org/petitions/campaign-for-a-1-for-1-solar-feed-in-tariff-1.
