With the weather turning from hot and humid one day, to cooler and wet the next, your pool may be suffering from extreme changes. When you don’t know what tomorrow will bring, it can be easy to neglect your pool.
The problem with neglecting your pool, even for just a few days, is that it can become unbalanced. Once that happens it takes a lot more effort to bring your once-inviting pool back to optimal levels for swimming in. And if the weather gets to swimming temperatures, you, your family and your friends are likely to want to use the pool straight away rather than wasting precious cooling off time reviving it.
Here are some tips for easily maintaining your pool, and hopefully preventing costly problems or more intense maintenance down the track:
- Run your filter daily – there are usually off-peak times over night, so check with your electricity provider as to what the best time for running your pool filter would be.
- Skim regularly – by clearing out leaves and debris on a regular basis, your filter basket will accumulate less waste and allow your filter to run more efficiently.
- Check PH levels weekly – this ensures you have the right chemical balance, and will indicate whether you need to top up on necessary chemicals.
- Replace hose connections – especially if your automatic pool cleaner isn’t working properly 100% of the time, it may be as simple as water being sucked through a hose connection instead of through the cleaner itself, making it pick up debris from the pool floor less efficiently.
- Alter the chlorinator level throughout the year to suit the season. More chlorine for the months you’re swimming regularly and less chlorine during months that you intend to stay dry.
Whilst this might seem like a significant amount of maintenance, none of these steps are complicated, and if you get into a routine you’ll be able to get the job done even faster, and will inevitably save time and/or money on bringing your pool back to a usable state if you let it go without regular maintenance.
