For those who are following The Block’s renovations unfold, you will no doubt have seen last week’s ‘lighting’ challenge. The pairs were given seven hours to create their own bedside table lamps and floor lamp for use in their guest bedroom. This may sound reasonably straight forward, but it’s actually a lot more difficult than you might first think. First the pairs had to consider the design of their lights, knowing they only had 7 hours before they needed to be presented to the judges, and of course the lights had to fit in the style of their rooms. Lighting is extremely important, and as noted by guest judge Christopher Boots, it can make or break a room.
We thought we’d share a few tips when considering your home’s lighting, for those who are renovating, or simply in need of an upgrade in ambience.
- Natural lighting is the best source of light, so whenever possible have the curtains open and allow the sun to do the work. While it’s only been hinted at, future episodes of The Block will see the twins creating a void on their higher level to increase the amount of light downstairs. Be clever and inventive, and make your home look larger and brighter without extending a wall or adding a drop of paint.
- There are various types of light; general lighting, feature lighting, decorative lighting, exterior lighting and directional lighting. When thinking about decorative lights, such as wall sconces, table lamps and floor lamps, it’s imperative that you consider the materials and colours, and the mood you’re trying to create. As we saw on The Block, different materials can create a very different feel – from the warmth of timber to the industrial look of copper and steel.
- The illusion of space is defined by light reflected off of the surfaces of the walls. Some types of lighting help with this illusion by further lighting up the wall, while directional lighting and recessed lighting can soften the wall colours.
If you’re designing a room, our recommendation is that you don’t neglect the lighting. It can be just as important as wall colours, furniture and flooring. For more tips on styling your home or preparing it for sale, please contact our friendly Professionals Paradise Realty team today.
