This week is Keep Australia Beautiful Week and everyone in Liverpool has been urged to take a look at their day-to-day lives and ask themselves what can be done to help reduce litter and household waste and ultimately save our environment.
Did you know that Australians are one of the highest producers of waste in the world per capita, and every Australian throws away on average over one tonne of waste each year? This is a shocking amount for a country with only a small population.
Most of this waste ends up in our landfills even though a lot of it can be recycled or reused in some way.
To make matters worse, a lot of waste doesn’t even make it into a bin. About 48 million litres of rubbish is littered each year and this can end up in waterways where it can potentially harm local plants and wildlife for years and years to come.
So this week serves as a good time to start paying a bit more attention to our daily habits and to think about what can be done to ensure that we dispose of things in the right way, whether it be by recycling, composting, repurposing or simply putting our rubbish in the bin.
Are you helping to keep Liverpool beautiful?
